De Soto Junior High School Named 2024-25 Project Lead The Way Distinguished Gateway School

De Soto Junior High School has been nationally recognized as a 2024-25 Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Distinguished Gateway School, an honor awarded to select middle schools across the U.S. for providing broad access to transformative STEM learning experiences through PLTW’s Gateway program for grades 6-8.

“This recognition is a tremendous honor that reflects our commitment to excellence in STEM education for the students and the community of De Soto in just the second year of offering this program,” said Dr. Dustin Stockmann, PLTW teacher at De Soto Junior High School. “PLTW has transformed how our students engage with real-world problem-solving, collaboration, and discovering their passions. It’s been wonderful to see their ideas move from paper designs to functional creations.”

The PLTW Distinguished School designation celebrates schools that increase student access, engagement, and achievement in PLTW programs. To qualify, schools must meet rigorous criteria, including offering multiple PLTW units, maintaining high student participation, and demonstrating efforts to ensure access for all students.

“We are honored to be recognized as a PLTW Distinguished Gateway School,” said Mr. Ron Farrow, superintendent. “This reflects the incredible work of our educators and the growing enthusiasm of our students as they explore real-world learning through STEM and biomedical pathways. PLTW has expanded opportunities for our students to engage deeply in critical thinking, innovation, and hands-on problem-solving. We are excited to continue building a dynamic pathway that empowers students to grow, discover, and thrive in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and medicine.”

Research shows that the middle school years are pivotal for shaping high school, college, and career pathways. Through PLTW Gateway, students engage in relevant, hands-on learning—from designing robotics systems to exploring aerospace concepts—building critical thinking, teamwork, and confidence in STEM subjects.

“We are proud to honor De Soto Junior High School for their commitment to providing students with exceptional educational experiences through PLTW programs,” said Dr. David Dimmett, PLTW President and CEO. “This achievement celebrates their dedication to student success and their focus on empowering students with the knowledge and skills necessary for the future.”

De Soto Junior High School joins a national network of schools, universities, and corporate partners united in providing students with inspiring, engaging, and empowering learning opportunities.
